Memories (Light installation)

This project is about remembrance and about releasing. I used my private analogue archive, I was collecting for years, to understand and objectify my relation to the phenomenon of fading memories, decease and letting things go.
I made a selection of my archive of negatives, making groups of the connected pictures by themes or periods. Then I enlarged them to sheet film negatives. The last step of this process was a kind of releasing ceremony – I created distracted photo montages of the negatives using flame. It was an immersive and touching experience to see as the pictures with the dearest faces and memories were burning and melting.
With these memory objects in my hand, I created an installation. I have suspended them, projected the transparent photographs to the wall and surrounded myself with the images of my life to be recalled and created an atmosphere in which the viewers could get involved too .
Our memories are getting blurred, just like my burnt, melted sheet film negatives. There are times, we can pick up the fragments easily, sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we cannot remember anything except for some small details or blurry, vanishing pictures. With this installation, I intended to create something that recalls these feelings, and makes the onlooker stop and receive the view slowly.
