We see what is real. We see because light reflects off objects and through our eyes and mind an image registers. A photograph captures a moment passing and freezes the impression. Easy to think of a photograph this way with analog mediums. A simple capture, no manipulation.
Yet, even the revered Ansel Adams masterfully manipulated the captured image so the resulting one barely resembled the original. The final image, the presented moment, always existed in the world. It needed a path to become visible.
Through physical on set distortion and post editing manipulation, these photographs share abstract expressions and experiences through physical form: the photograph. As light allows us to view the physical world, these photographs allow us to view the intangible parts of us. Fears, dreams, release, intrigue. Using the physical art, these abstractions become more real. From here we learn to understand them.
