Darkness stems from a reflection on fear, and how fear lives within us. More specifically, the project aims to explore our ability to deal with disturbing experiences, and moments of crisis, rupture and darkness.
When pushed to the limit, we can always take refuge in different states of being in order to face life’s ordeals. In order to protect ourselves, to break free unscathed. Or even to learn to cope with our own selfhood. On these countless escape routes, some founder, while others manage to forge ahead and prevent darkness from taking over.
This series of images aims to embody and interpret the most private of feelings: vulnerability, weakness, isolation, stagnation, hardship, insouciance, forgetting, struggle, denial, adaptation and resilience.
Some of these images are the result of a specific intention while shooting, while others naturally detached themselves from their original context by way of the emotion emanating from them, as perceived by the photographer.
For both the artist and viewer, this project is a call to make these photographs our own, and to let feelings interpret the imagery and the stories it recounts.
