Collectively, these works represent the traversed circuit of a 12-hour walk between the Oriental Pearl Tower on one end of Century Avenue to the Science and Technology Center on the other end, and back. During the walk I divided the visual landscape into discrete zones of textural differentiation, noting transitions between industrial, commercial, domestic and various other possible distinctions relating to the urban development. I photographed these zones with an eye towards textural variation of the constructed surfaces. After selecting representative images corresponding to points on the route, I digitally modeled small forms abstracted from notable architectural features. These forms became patterns onto which I arranged the photographs, and then hand-cut and assembled into volumetric photographs. The result is a series of model-scale sculptures that act as imperfect memories of one day’s walk through the urban landscape of Shanghai.
