The work I have submitted are portraits I have taken on 35mm film, and wet plate collodion on aluminum plates. My work is a collaboration between myself and my subject. Sometimes I shoot with people I know, but much of the time the work I create is with people I just met. As someone who used to be very shy, I have used photography as a way to talk to people, get to know people, and become more comfortable not just with others, but with myself. By using film, and wet plates, I am forced to slow down, take my time, and really think about the images I am creating. Because of this, I get more time with my subject. I get to talk to them about the processes I use, teach them how it all works. It all becomes an opportunity for us to get to know each other and really create something together. In the case of a wet plate, we create an image that is a one-of-a-kind object that represents a story we have created together.
