MARIA: the book

MARIA is a photo book memorializing victims of the 1932-33 Holodomor - famine-genocide - in Soviet Ukraine, where millions died. At its center is a single vernacular image of a young girl, Maria F., who survived and currently resides in Canada. Maria-Karina Bojikian in her review of the book for THE EYES #10 describes the book as a '...poetic book on memory ..." citing to Victor Segalen, the French naval doctor, ethnographer, archeologist, writer, poet, explorer, art-theorist, linguist and literary critic: “This ode to the past can't therefore be ancient: it must be of today.” Victor Segalen
