As a resident of the inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Carlton has two universities, is a base for Trade Unions and has a diversified resident population. Gentrified renovated terrace houses sit alongside government hi-rise housing. The student population is large and house sharing is common in the unrenovated terraces. Trendy shopping and a strong food culture co-exist.
I became aware that once vibrant, bohemian artist society was being diluted by large commercial developments. I set about as part of my visual arts study to capture the many charming characteristics of the area before it was lost forever, some of which already no longer exist.
The images submitted are a snapshot of the many taken and give an impression of seasonal, quirky, colourful, political and pictorial views of Carlton’s street, lanes and hidden sights that I have been photographing over a period of seven years. I intend to publish selected images in a photography book
