Roadside memorials are part of the traveling experience throughout the world. Whether you agree with them or not, they adorn our road shoulders, medians, and sidewalks to commemorate the deceased at a location closest to where they left this life on earth. Many are as eclectic, beautiful craft art pieces as they are profound visual reminders about the dangers and perils of driving a car or riding a bike. Still others pay tribute to our beloved animals/pets or fallen soldiers fighting our wars.
In this series, I tried to capture images that release a variety of emotions while inviting the viewer to take in the story, and hence embrace the message that each roadside memorial is intended to give. Perhaps the most shocking (and personal for me) are the images of the Ghost Bikes. There is something truly haunting and hopeless that resonates from these images. It begs the question: Does a cyclist on today's roads really have a chance?
