During the global pandemic, I found that there has been a reversion to life that is dominated by one’s home. This return to domesticity is prompted by a fear of the unknown, and serves as a constant in a time of constant change. This collection is an attempt to capture that simultaneous fear and hope. In these modern times, however, traditional domestic norms must be subverted by independence and strength, especially for women. I noticed a similar thread with women and the home in the sixties and seventies as they found a middle ground between new societal freedoms and familiar household responsibilities from the past. As a mother and a working professional, I identify with this tension. There is a constant battle between wanting absolute freedom and wanting the comfort of the familiar. The pandemic has exacerbated this relationship, which prompted my vision for this exhibit.
