Fairy Paths and Pixy Moors―the fairies live here and there 精霊はそこここに宿る

At the beginning of the 20th century an incident known as "The Case of the Cottingley Fairies" took place in England. Some girls from the village of Cottingley in northern England supposedly took "photographs of fairies" and in total five of these photographs were found between 1916 and 1920. A controversy occurred over whether these photographs were real of fake and it caused quite a commotion. The person at the center of this verification was Arthur Conan Doyle, the author famous for "Sherlock Homes". Photos at that time were photographed on photographic plates to become negatives. Doyle felt both doubtful and suspicious about the case but it is said that he treated it as an important historical matter and undertook a serious investigation. Doyle consulted with authorities in supernatural phenomenon and experts in photography and announced his conclusion that the results showed that the "photographic plates" used by the girls to produce the photographs were genuine and that there was no trace of other artificial methods, such as double exposure. However, finally in 1983, one of the girls in her later years confessed the truth that this incident was created by "cutting out a fairy drawn in a picture and taking a photograph by holding the image with a pin" and the case was closed. To take a photograph that captures light and temperature has to be something material. In the "Case of the Cottingley Fairies" photographs, the fairies that we can see are made from the materials of "pictures drawn on paper." But isn‘t it true then that all illusions are something fake? Were these photos simply just a "fraud "? The subject that I want to examine here along with my own work, is not a deliberation on whether fairies actually exist. Nor is it about the significance of photographic processing. Just by thinking about the nature of "fantasy" itself, I would like to take this opportunity to question the relevance between the real world and fantasy and its credibility. Long ago in the UK a lot of people believed in fairies and it was considered wise not to offend even the good fairies and at times even throw them some pieces of bread and cheese. And many talismans or amulets were conceived to be used as protection against bad fairies. Fairies are said to have various origins, including a personification of the forces of nature, the ancient gods having become smaller, the souls of the dead, fallen angels or something created by the smile on a baby‘s face. Sometimes they bring help to humans, at other times they bring mischief. The stories handed down tell of their existence on farms, in mines, in places where people fish or hunt, in monasteries and in forests, but not only in the great outdoors, they also dwell in places close by people. For example, "The Apple Tree Man. " One kind of nymph in the apple trees, it was said that he lived in the oldest tree in the orchards of the UK and helped people who did good deeds every day. People said that the fairies had different appearances and personalities, sometimes looking like a grotesque monster or having an enchanting appearance, other times in the form of a dog or cow or looking like a human male or female. There were graceful fairies that made the flowers bloom, kind fairies that told people about a coming storm, frightening fairies that kidnapped human children, cheerful fairies that liked to sing and dance in the moonlit night, or those that confused travelers and even those that fell in love with human beings. People widely believed in fairies and there were stories of humans going to the land of the fairies and not coming back for decades or coming back mad. These things may not be possible in the real world if considered logically.They may only be useless fables in the busy life of modern society. However, it is a fact that these anecdotes have survived even today and have continued to be handed down all of this time. In other words, I think they are very important. What is called "fantasy" is not only limited to fairies but refers to something that we cannot see, hear or touch and as such is a concept that exists as a result of "only belief". As it is very personal in nature, the way of seeing it is different according to each person and it could be called a world that is fostered in the heart and mind of each individual. So even for us living in the world of advanced civilization, just to think that fairies may be there even though we cannot see them helps us feel even more the appeal of the secret pathway in the backyard, the cold and frosty mornings, the tranquility of the forest and the untouched nature of the moors (wilderness and wetlands). We could say that the mystery of nature is a beautiful product that has been created in immeasurable ways and from the experience of being quietly sensitive to that bewildering and strange mystery, new stories and new views of the world can be created. Human beings can feel their own inner self through the spiritual realm created by thoughts and ideas from associations, memory and experience. In other words, being exposed to the fantasy world of ideas enables you to have a new way of looking at the reality of the world in front of you and creates a further reality. Everything is created from this interaction and the world becomes a richer place to live in. I believe that this kind of experience is the essence of "fantasy". Now, when the old apple tree is in front of your eyes in the real world, if you imagine the "Apple Tree Man" from before, it feels like a new spiritual world opens up at that time and place. These are the values that I believe are important. Fantasy never takes the place of reality, it supplements reality and therefore is neither an escape nor a lie. It all depends on the person and it may be a difficult matter that each person has to decide for themselves. The author of "The Neverending Story" Michael Ende states in the book, "Only by having a sound inner world is it possible to heal the outer world." That is what would be the nature of fantasy. Fairy paths and Pixy Moors―the fairies live here and there These photographs are a continuation of the previous work Whispering with elves, trolls, and hidden-folks using a pin-hole camera without any multiple exposure or digital processing and always taken with a one shutter release and printed in a darkroom. My purpose is not to prove that the appearance of fairies was captured as in the "The Case of the Cottingley Fairies" photographs but at the least I am given the impression that something mysterious was photographed beyond what can be seen with the naked eye. So, basically, if only visible materials can be captured in these photographs, what on earth can those phenomena be that appear in the photographs? Finally I would like to say that an explanation based on scientific evidence would be easy but I believe that something different to this, a mysterious reason also exists. Based on the notion I have always held until now that "fantasy is a kind of truth that definitely exists by believing in feelings," I have taken the fantasies that are evoked within myself and tried to express them by combining the reality that could be seen there with the visual element of the "photograph" and responded to my view of the world in my own way. By putting my work together again here I hope that this attempt may give other people, even in just a small way, an opportunity to enrich their inner world. ーーーーー Fairy Paths and Pixy Moors　精霊はそこここに宿る 20世紀初頭、イギリスで『コティングリー妖精事件』とよばれる出来事がありました。イギリスの北部コティングリー村の少女たちが撮ったとされる“妖精の写真”が1916年から1920年の間に全部で5枚見つかり、それらが本物か偽物なのかをめぐる論争が起き、大変な騒動になったのです。その検証の中心人物となったのが『シャーロック・ホームズ』で有名な作家、アーサー・コナン・ドイルでした。 当時の写真は、ネガとなるガラス乾板に写されていました。ドイルはこの件に関し、疑いや戸惑いもあったようですが、思想史上の一大事として捉え真剣に探求したと言われています。ドイルは、超自然現象の権威の方々や写真の専門家とのやりとりを通じ、結果、少女たちが写した「ガラス乾板」が本物であること、また二重写しやその他の人工的な細工の痕跡もないとの結論を発表しました。しかし、この事件は結局のところ、1983年に少女のひとりが晩年「あれは絵に描いた妖精を切り抜き、それをピンで止め撮影したものだった」と真相を告白し幕を閉じました。 光や温度を捉える写真に写るには、それが物質的なものである必要があります。『コティングリー妖精事件』の写真で、私たちの目に見えた妖精は“紙に描かれた絵”という物質だったわけです。では、やっぱり幻想なんて全てはまやかしなのでしょうか？これらの写真は“捏造”でしかなかったのでしょうか？ ここで私が自分の作品とともに問いたい主題は、妖精の実態の審議ではありません。写真加工の意義でもありません。ただ「幻想」そのものの本質について考え、現実世界との関連性、真実性を問うきっかけとしたいのです。 ・・・イギリスでは昔、多くの人々が妖精を信じていて、たとえ良い妖精であっても怒らせないようにするのが賢明と考えられ、パンやチーズのかけらを投げてやることもありました。そして悪い妖精に対しては、考えられる限りたくさんの魔よけやお守りを用いていました。 そんな妖精の起源はいろいろで、自然の力を擬人化したもの、太古の神々が小さくなったもの、死者の魂、堕天使、赤ちゃんの笑顔から生まれたものなどと言われてきました。彼らは人間の手助けをしてくれることもあれば、いたずらをしかけてくることもあります。農場、鉱山、漁場、狩場、修道院、森など、大自然の中だけではなく、人々に身近な場にも宿ると言い伝えられています。例えば「アップルツリーマン」。りんごの木の精の一種で、イギリスの果樹園で一番古いりんごの木に棲み、毎日良い行いをしている人を助けていたそうです。 容姿や性質は様々で、時にグロテスクな妖怪のような姿、美しく魅惑的な姿、犬や牛の形、人間の男女のようでもあったそうです。花を咲かせてくれるような優雅な妖精、嵐がくるのを予想してくれる親切な妖精、人間の子供をさらったりする恐ろしい妖精、月夜に歌や踊りを好む陽気な妖精、また旅人を惑わせたり、人間と恋に落ちることもあったということで、人間が妖精の国に行くと帰ってきたときには何十年も経っていたり、気が狂って帰ってくるなどということが人々の間で広く信じられていました・・・ これらの事柄は、論理的に考えれば現実世界ではありえないかもしれません。現代社会のせわしない生活には役に立たない寓話でしかないかもしれません。しかし、これらの逸話は現在でも生き残り、ずっと語り継がれていることは事実。つまり、とても大切なことだと想うのです。 妖精に限らず「幻想」とよばれているものは、見たり聞いたり触ったりできないもので、つまりは「信じることのみ」によって存在する観念であり、本来とても個人的なもので、それぞれの人によって見え方が違い、個人が胸のなかで育む世界と言えるでしょう。 現代の文明が進んだ世の中で生活する私たちでさえ、目には見えなくとも、精霊がいると考えるだけで、裏庭の秘密の通路や、霜が降りる冷たい朝、森の静けさや、ムーア（荒野・湿原）地帯の手つかずの自然にさらなる魅力を感じるのではないでしょうか。自然の神秘が計り知れない方法で生み出してきた美しい産物とも言えるでしょう、その惑わされるような不可思議な謎を静かに感受すれば、その体験からは新たな物語や世界観が生まれるはずです。 人間は、連想・記憶・経験から考えや想いを巡らした精神世界を、自分自身の内面に抱くことができます。つまり、幻想世界のアイディアにふれることによって、目の前の現実と交えた世界の新しい見え方が可能になり、さらなる現実をつくり、相互作用で全体が生まれ、世界がもっと豊かになるのです。そういう経験が「幻想」の本質だと私は考えています。 いま、現実世界で目の前に見える古いりんごの木を前に、例えば「アップルツリーマン」を胸に想い、新たな精神世界がその場で生まれるような状態。その価値観こそが大切だと想っています。ファンタジーとは決して現実の代わりではなく、現実を補うもので、逃避でもうそでもないはずです。 つまり全ては本人次第、それぞれの人が自らの判定を下さなければならない難しい事柄かもしれません。『はてしない物語』の作家ミヒャエル・エンデは、その著書で「内面世界を健全にすることによってのみ、外の世界を癒すことができる」と述べています。それこそが幻想の本質でしょう。 『Fairy paths and Pixy Moors 〜　精霊はそこここに宿る』 これらの写真は、前作『小妖精達とのささやき』に引き続き、ピンホールカメラを使い、多重露光でもデジタル加工でもなく、まぎれもなく1回のシャッターの間に写され、暗室でプリントされた写真です。 『コティングリー妖精事件』の写真のように、妖精の姿を捉え証明することを目的とはしていませんが、少なくとも肉眼でみえるもの以上の不可思議な何かが写った印象を受けています。では、本来、可視可能な物質しかとらえられないはずの写真に写ったこれらの現象は一体なんなのか？ 言ってしまえば科学的根拠に基づく説明も簡単にできてしまいますが、しかし、それとは違う不可解な理由も存在していると私は信じるのです。今まで私はずっと、「幻想は想い信じることにより確かに存在する真実の一種」という観念のもと、自分の中に喚起する幻想を、そこに見えた現実と交え光学的な「写真」に現そうと試みることを自分なりの世界観への対応としてきました。この私の試みが、少しでも他の人々にとって、その内面世界を豊かにするきっかけになったらいいと望み、ここに再び作品としてまとめました。
