In the year 2 of covid, much of what we long took for granted keeps calling for fresh reflection. Likewise, the record we keep from that blissful time before lockdowns sometimes begins to loosely invoke new meanings. This is certainly true for me. These photos were taken over a period of a few years ante covid, often alongside unrelated assignments. They don’t have a common subject but what they do share are flashes of that invoking potential. Things like these have always existed somewhere amid the cacophony of signals screaming for our attention. Each of these images captures that kind of encounter that usually ends up drowned out by the surrounding environment or by some loud action just outside the frame. If there are no people in the image, there is an imprint of their recent presence. But just like in a lone clip from a lost movie, their story is never finished and is now gone forever. Something we may have become temporarily more attuned to these days. Which should encourage us to view each image through the prism of our own associations and experiences. Including, I don’t know, a certain pandemic.
