Terroirs

The name Terroirs, beyond its primary meaning that indicates the soil of a specific geographical area, is widespread among professionals and enthusiasts of quality wine products. I chose this name, with a bitter irony, to indicate the contrast between the name and whoever supplies the workforce of one of the most renowned products of the land of South Africa This open personal project, started in 2014, is still going in the Western Cape, mainly in the“ Terroirs ”of the Huguenot Valley. Here the workforce, albeit led by experts mainly of distant or recent European origin, is made up of black Africans, coming from various parts of Africa, not only from the Western Cape. The harvesters are recruited from intermediaries who usually do not collect but merely check. Most harvesters are young women, who sometimes arrive with elegance and sensuality. My love for "mother earth" is well married with the female presence. I found in them a sense of aggregation and belonging to a community, rather than an attachment to the territory. Over the past three years, the arrival of workers from Malawi has sparked a wave of cheer that was lacking in the Western Cape. The project, started as a story of the harvesters, was directed after the first year to more poetic implications, and wants to represent with a touch of poetry and love the temporary union of mother earth with the strength and characters of this people, especially the women, thrown into these vast "terroirs", without any specific link or knowledge about the mission accomplished. Il nome Terroirs, al di là del suo significato primario che indica il suolo di una determinata area geografica, è diffuso tra i professionisti e gli appassionati di prodotti enologici di qualità. Il progetto, nato come story-telling, si è rivolto dopo il primo anno a risvolti più poetici, e vuole rappresentare con un tocco di poesia e amore l'unione temporanea di madre terra con la forza e i caratteri di questo popolo, in particolare le donne, gettati in questi vasti "terroir", senza alcun legame o conoscenza specifica del settore.
