This Series is evocative of classic Abstract Surrealism. The forms appear to be generated by the unconscious without specific reference to representational objects. They were created by a type of “automatic” visioning in which I cut up a variety of waste materials and tossed them onto a my studio work table then photographed and cropped the results... spontaneous expression. There is a child-like gaiety that sparkles from each image. They are filled with biomorphic, metaphysical, fantasy forms and movements. Even the geometric shapes seem vigorous and life filled while their unnerving sense of space and movement give them a strange formal harmony. The sort-of exploiting ‘non-technique’ that created these compositions allows for free association within and between the individual shapes. It also generates an optimistic aura with subtle mysterious undertones sometimes echoing primitive art. While chance runs counter to most people’s conceptions of art, it has been a vital component of it since its very beginning and the images I capture are evocative of that history.
Except for minor modifications in contrast or hue the only computer processes applied to my staged abstract photographs is the stamp cloning over of small distractive spots.
Note: each image I create is limited to ten archival pigment prints per size, signed and numbered verso.
