Motivated by his challenging personal experience during the Covid pandemic, Philip Guerette explores the universal themes of depression, addiction, isolation, hopelessness, loss of livelihood, self-esteem, and even hope that most people have had to deal with in some form or another during this difficult time. He does this in an absurdist, darkly comic, and sometimes searingly somber manner, utilizing the metaphor of a "shit sandwich." The "shit sandwich" symbolizes the difficult hand that everyone was dealt regarding Covid and shutdowns etc. and forced to reckon with over the course of more than a year and counting. These staged shots begin with a dialogue between Philip and his subjects about their own personal experiences in the time of Covid. The unearthed information helps dictate how each subject is shot - honoring their experience in this stylized way. This series is ongoing.
