Water Vapors

While the photographs and stories of hands were uppermost in my first three exhibits, my new photographs of water are about what our hands have done to and for the water. Water is everyone's resource and our brains and our hearts are composed of 73% water. While I want to celebrate water as everyone's resource for life, I also want to highlight the commonplace manner that we exploit water without even being aware of what we're doing. Love for and connections to others, to the earth, to our water and to our faith are the best that we have. May your connections be many and your love strong. And may we make the changes needed to make the world a better place for our children's children's children.

The storm drain system is a network of catch basins, manholes, channels and underground pipes that carry stormwater (rain water) to holding ponds and eventually the Minnesota River. . .

The steep, lower parts of the LeSueur and other tributaries to the Minnesota River have been among the fastest incising (down-cutting) rivers in the world since a massive glacial lake catastrophically drained through the Minnesota River 13,000 years ago.

. . . installation of water detention basins, or ephemeral wetlands, distributed throughout the watershed is the best solution for reducing peak flows and therefore bluff erosion rates and sediment pollution. We need to slow the delivery of water. . . storing water in these detention basins/wetlands in the upper parts of the watershed for 5-10 days.

Whirligig beetles are referred to as the bumper cars of the beetle world. . . mobs of whirligig beetles scoot across the still waters of ponds, lakes, streams and rivers. Whirligig beetles' eyes are split; half of each eye lies below the horizon and half rises above it, so they can view two worlds at once -- pretty handy for a predator.
