Medical Mocks’ are an illusion of anatomical structures with objects orbiting in microcosmic spaces. The artificially constructed images have to do with the fragility of life. Though suggestive of human anatomical medical imagery, they are in fact, scientific impossibilities. The viewer is asked to dissect these paradoxical images and to determine whether the images are scientific, or fantastical. Many of the images also bear resemblance to the astrological and even the extraterrestrial.
The methodology of the work is largely comprised of using theatrical lighting techniques, and photographing artificially constructed sets and objects, in camera. Special effects and digital manipulation are utilized in postproduction adding to the hyperrealism of the images. Sometimes the artist also collages photographs of ‘real’ components (photographed by her) into the imagery as well.
On a more obscure level, the imagery alludes to the continued and rapid technological advances of the digital era, particularly with regard to cameras and their capabilities. Though it is a fantasy today, perhaps tomorrow, medical imaging will be able to capture super microscopic imagery and allow scientists to get closer views of the macrocosms, which exist, in the human body. The ability to supersede the medical cameras of today, and to be able to obtain high resolution macro views of human bodily interiors (in Technicolor nonetheless), will bear witness for new discoveries which will include the earliest possible detections and therefore, earlier solutions for prevention of diseases and for wellness.
The artist’s imagery retains its tactile qualities and bold sense of color, by applying theatrical lighting techniques and continuing to create her artificially constructed o objects and sets. Her subjects come to life just as Gapetto’s favorite marionette, Pinocchio. The ‘real’ and the ‘unreal’ are blended together presenting her objects, which masquerade seamlessly, taking center stage in her medial theater.
The images are intended to provide perspective, humor and hope, despite their edgy veneer.
