'DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude' is a long-term series, (and recently released book by Daylight Books) spanning three decades, culminating during the Covid 19 Pandemic. I used peopled restaurant interiors as a metaphor to highlight what the experience of being alone in public looks like. 'Using a Cinema Verite' approach, her camera lens unveils truths, in a documentary approach.' (Laura Pressley, who wrote my foreword.) The subtle nuances of my subjects both reveal and conceal how they feel when they dine alone.
Though I was reluctant to expand the scope of this work, one day while having a cup of coffee in an outdoor dining space during the COVID-19 Pandemic, I decided that the pandemic brought on a heightened awareness and sensitivity to what solitude and isolation meant for each of us. Paradoxically, the pandemic also connected each of us since we were all experiencing an awareness of the fragility of life and the fact that this virus did not discriminate. Perhaps we came to terms with our aloneness and were bound to one another through this awareness.
