I shot this series of about 40 portraits in central Toulouse (France) during the first lockdown in April and May 2020.
Here I’d like to continue with a recommendation by Ed Kashi describing the project :
”In a moment where much of the world was caught unprepared to deal with a global pandemic, and many artists were forced to stop their work, Dorothée Lebrun jumped into action. She set up a backdrop in her street in Toulouse and invited her neighbors to “sit” for their portraits. But she took it one step farther, asking them to present themselves as they desired, to reflect what they do, show something about their lives. Ultimately Ms Lebrun was able to portray her community with affection, respect, dignity and even a little humor, at a moment where we were struggling to find community and feel a sense of belonging.”
The series is an hommage to the German photographer, Stefan Moses, who travelled throughout Germany in the 1950s with a tissue screen portraying post-war professional Germans.
It was shown twice in Toulouse in 2021 and was rewarded an honorable mention by Monovisions Award in 2021.
With the publishing house ”La 21eme Saison” we are currently editing a photo book "Quand même/Anyway/Trotzdem" of the series which is published in three languages in April 2023.
