The Federation of Nigeria was granted full independence on October 1, 1960 under a constitution that provided for a parliamentary government and a substantial measure of self-government.
“1960 was the Year of Africa. Over seventeen countries rid themselves of colonial rule and a new sense of pride in being African played out through literature, music, art and fashion... Pan-Africanism, though contentious, was a motivational force within the independence movements. It fostered a self-assuredness that catalysed a drive for political autonomy and infused the creative arts” V&A Africa Fashion Exhibition
‘British-Nigerian’ is a modern interpretation of Yoruba fashion from the perspective of Nigerians in the diaspora. A collaboration between stylist Anita Makinde and the photographer, who are both British-Nigerian. An ode to the past, the story pays respect to the personality and flair of Nigerians after their independence from British colonial rule through fashion portraiture.
