In 2017, I left Iran to seek refuge in Germany. Upon arrival, I embarked on a photographic journey—an exploration aimed at understanding, familiarizing myself with, and ultimately surviving in this unfamiliar land, examining the daily points where they converged to shape a new sense of self. However, by 2021, amid intense financial, physical, mental, and emotional struggles, I found myself questioning the purpose of survival: Why persistently document the day-to-day battle for survival? Why endure in an environment that eludes understanding and fails to acknowledge me? “hopeless wanderer” serves as a reflection on the purpose of survival and explores whether the act of photography can function as both a means for survival and a tool for grappling with existential questions of identity and belonging.
