Photography cannot exist without light; the process involves the reception of light onto a light sensitive surface. Photography means drawing with light; the symbol of life, optimism, happiness, and even immortality. Darkness on the other hand is associated with chaos, despair, and even death.
Just as many philosophers recognise that light cannot exist without darkness, the photographic process also requires darkness for dimension and form. This project explores the relationship between light and dark, both from a photographic and an existential perspective. The subjects in the candid images are variously in or out of darkness, captured early morning in public and in places 'where the shadows fall'.
