During my time living in my hometown of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, I embarked on one of my first photographic projects that sought to unveil the harsh realities faced by the Yukpa indigenous community residing on the outskirts. Through a series of compelling photographs, I captured the dire conditions these resilient individuals endured while focusing on the radiant faces of the children that radiated hope.
Venturing into the outskirts of Barquisimeto, I encountered a large family belonging to the Yukpa ethnic group. Living on the streets, they faced numerous challenges, including inadequate shelter, limited access to essential resources, and systemic marginalization. With great empathy and respect, I documented their daily struggles, allowing their stories to unfold through my camera lens.
The photographs provide an unfiltered portrayal of the Yukpa community's living conditions, revealing the stark reality they faced. Dilapidated makeshift shelters, scarcity of food, and the absence of basic amenities are brought to the forefront, exposing the underlying socio-economic disparities prevalent in their lives. These images aim to spark awareness and action, encouraging viewers to confront the systemic issues that perpetuate such dire circumstances.
Through this photographic project, I endeavored to shed light on the often overlooked struggles of indigenous communities, particularly the Yukpa people, while emphasizing their strength, resilience, and the power of hope. The image
