A fascinating wilderness in that, from afar, the mountains present a rather flat level profile belying their true nature. The United States most significant east/west trending mountain range has, at regular intervals, north and south alpine basins scoured by glacial action. It is only by hiking into these basins can you really appreciate them. Wide, undulating sub-alpine and alpine basins abut the cirque walls gouged by glaciers; usually with a rather robust stream/river coursing either north or south. Alpenglow seems to go on for hours!
