Girl gymnasts who live between passion, discipline and obsession for a sport that demands high dedication and rigor. Through portraits in their intimate spaces, this series talks about the daily search for required balance between entering adolescence, academic studies and the fascination with gymnastics.
Equilibrium also works on tension and contrasts at different levels. From leading a life with high demands in sports, academics and social matters, and at the same time being a girl between 9 and 13 or 14 years old. On the other hand, the tension that is reflected in the images, by showing bedrooms that are too small for them to train and move freely. Finally, the tension between strength, hard work and effort, as opposed to delicacy and elegance.
Although I come from a totally different world from that of artistic gymnastics, I was attracted to —and it is something that I share with them—that obsession and passion that arises when we like something and we like it a lot. All these girls train hard for long hours around four days a week or even more. Their bravery and confidence in their bodies is admirable.
