This project focuses on the night time on the water of the enslaved in Suriname. The rivers of Suriname were used to transport all kinds of goods city to transport such as coffee, tobacco, cocoa and cane sugar. The enslaved brought hours on the water rowing their boats: during that time they rehearsed new ones songs with critical comments about the masters. The songs were sung through a call-and-response technique in which one person takes the lead and the rest respond to it. It was a new way of creating cultural elements and start feeling powerful.Songs In A Strange Land is project that visualizes the stories of hope and resilience, and the ways in which these traditions allow us to glimpse at the years of slavery. With the code language hidden in worksongs. These stories and traditions, passed down from Africa to Suriname, and from generation to generation, enabled enslaved to share their thoughts without the slaveholder knowing what was actually meant.
