The series Heat Island refers to the 'Urban Heat Island Effect' and documents Manhattan street life specifically on designated official heatwave days. NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in the USA officially defines a heatwave as three consecutive days over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (just over 32 Degrees Celsius). The photographs are part of body of work committed to life within the City Island but form an important chapter given the climatic changes and concerns that increasingly threaten our lives upon Planet Earth.
The often present Sunshine became important to my work both aesthetically and technically (all year round) but the Summer months would reveal different aspects of life and behavior that seemed more poignant as time passed by. These photographs were shot between 2012 - 2015 and were intended mainly to comment upon the urban weather phenomenon and often casual attitudes to the sunshine. Within a larger sense they might also speak of our increased World Urbanization and interplay with our lifegiving Star, especially as the Ozone layer depletes and UV light increases.
