This project tells the stories of women in contemporary Japanese society. Today, women come from a wide range of backgrounds. We,Jeanne is a unit of two Japanese female artists. They have different lifestyles, but share a common desire to stand on their own feet and live on their own.
All around us, there are many women who, despite facing setbacks and struggles, look ahead and embrace their daily lives. Drawing on the experiences of these women, we interviewed 30 individuals to delve into the turning points in their lives.Building on these experiences, we blended fiction and non-fiction, along with elements of documentary and tableau, to bring their stories to life.
We added colorful interpretations to the feelings and memories that are difficult to convey with words. When these women make a decision, we felt that there is always some underlying emotion, such as anger, resignation, or loss, which eventually leads towards dreams and hope. These episodes can be heavy at times, but they can also be humorous and even absurd.
Women are changing with the times, striving to connect hope from the past and present to the future. We wanted to capture the realities of women living in today’s Japanese society, where gender awareness is often considered low, and to highlight their often-overlooked circumstances. This could be a story from my past, or possibly yours.
