The Curial estate is the largest public housing in Paris. With its 17 towers and 5,000 inhabitants, this neighborhood is a city within the city. It was built in the late 1960s, in the 19th district (the poorest), northeast of Paris, on the edge of the town. © Hugo Aymar

First inhabited by the middle class, the neighborhood is gradually impoverished. The middle classes leaved the area, replaced by the lower classes, mainly from immigration. That day is the block party, organized by a local association. Youth of the neighborhood helps to regulate the various activities: pony, stilts, african braids stand, parades... The party will end when a drunk man will threaten some youth with a stick. © Hugo Aymar

Bakary grew up in the neighborhood. Young, he was a member of the "Junior Sharks", a gang of the late 80s. He took part in violence against other gangs for the control of drug trafficking. Bakary is now active in the estate  in a very different way. Caretaker of tower N, he manages a car rental company and welcomes the youth at the "Curial Cafe" on Friday and Saturday nights. © Hugo Aymar
