This project explores femininity through the tension between identity, tradition, and the roles that are woven into women’s lives. I use hair, thread, clothing, and the act of knitting as visual symbols to explore how femininity is shaped through inherited traditions, expectations, memory, and personal experience. The woman’s face is concealed by her own hair, creating a sense of anonymity and suggesting an identity that exists beyond the individual. The red thread connects her hair, hands, and the fabric she is creating. It becomes a metaphor for the invisible connections between the past and the present, between what is inherited and what is created, and between identity and the roles imposed upon it. Through this image, I am interested in asking whether femininity is something we freely create, or something that is gradually woven into us.
