Many patients started at dawn for a walk which would take several hours. Arriving at the medical clinic, eager patients waited patiently for the clinic to begin at 8AM. © Lola Reid Allin

Unlike the heartbreaking images of the severely malnourished, this healthy family represents the future of Africa. With clean water, education and healthcare, their future holds promise. This adoring mother nestles her youngest of three. Somehow you know the doctor is smiling, enjoying a shared moment of understanding with another parent. © Lola Reid Allin

This young woman awaits a second opinion about her child, a referral from the first doctor to a pediatrician, their offices and examining rooms separated by this draped bed sheet. © Lola Reid Allin

When logistically possible our only female physician examined the female patients. © Lola Reid Allin

Many years ago Dr. Keith, our pediatrician, attached these miniature Canadian Inuit mukluks to his stethoscope to distract frightened young patients. This distraction failed to work with this young boy, terrified by his first visit to a physician. © Lola Reid Allin

Sometimes actions do speak louder than words. Although Dr Keith has an excellent working knowledge of Swahili, here we see him showing his young patient what to do: fungua mdomo (open your mouth). © Lola Reid Allin

I was surprised to see this woman gently grasp her husband’s hand in reassurance. Witnessing this tender interaction, rarely exhibited even privately between married Kenyan couples, I applauded their resilience, loyalty and enduring love. © Lola Reid Allin

A young MCF teacher soberly reflects as several of his students recall the 2008 post-election violence and murder in their hometown of Eldoret. © Lola Reid Allin
