Music has always been an important part of my life. It was the medium through which I discovered how art and expression can make you feel an entire spectrum of emotion without even a word. Music is both simple and complex, fluid yet regimented. Performing Jazz music can be such an intimate experience. All the technical practice and repetitive exercises every musician endures, just to shed it all away when they're playing- playing what is in their heart rather than in their mind. Like a musical performance, I wanted to groove with the musicians. I let them play freely, whatever they felt like playing, so I could get a feel for what they were feeling in the most non-verbal sense. The portraits I made were a reaction to the subjects, much like a jazz solo is a reaction to those that you're playing with.
