The Empty Chair

Parkinson's disease sufferer Dave Forsyth heads back inside after having a walk around his garden. Despite struggling he says that he doesn't want a walking stick to assist him. To date, despite having to use a wheel chair from time to time he still doesn't have one.

During short periods of increased lucidity my fathers wit remains sharp.

Regular medication is taken to try and counter the broad symptoms of the disease. This same medication also causes a number of side effects. My mother, Judy, has to constantly keep on top of the administering of his medication.

Periods of awareness become fewer as the disease takes more of a hold and it becomes increasingly difficult to fight the symptoms.

As he becomes increasingly unable to go out as much the slightest distraction such as the postman arriving outside of the house takes the attention.

Instructions written on the wall of the toilet give a reminder. My father's short term memory fades in and out at various times of the day.

A keen collector my father talks through a number of his model buses as they are displayed in the corridor.

Also collected over many years my father remains proud of the mint condition collection of Rupert the Bear annuals.

The effects of the medication can cause hallucinations. Here my father believes he can see another person in the next door room.

As the disease makes him more frail my father is prone to losing balance and falling over. This has resulted in a number of injuries. Wincing as my mother changes a dressing on his back after losing balance and sliding to the floor with his back to one of the walls which was covered in rough plaster.

As the muscle strength in the face slowly become weaker part of my father's face begins to sag slightly.

As the demands on my mother increase as she has to care more and more for my father. She has had the need to put him in a care home for 'respite' breaks.

Trying to maintain a routine in the care home starts when he gets up and where possible he tries to look after as much of his own personal care as he is able.

However the stresses and effects of his illness have led to certain precautions that have to be taken to ensure some degree of comfort.

He can spend a long time resting on the bed in the care home after taking some of the medication that he needs.

As my fathers mind wanders and he suffers increasing confusion he has periods where he wanders around the care home and rearranges things and wanders off carrying some of the things as he passes them.

Having lost his book the day before he is delighted to finally find it under one of the chairs in one of the communal rooms.

Sitting on his bed in his room in the care home he asks about other members of the family to see if they are also visiting at the same time.

After getting up late my father sits and sleeps in his dressing gown as he waits to be dressed and given his medication by one of the nurses.
