The annual festival at Tomioka Hachiman-gu Shrine is said that the festival attracts around 500 000 spectators. Once every 3 years becomes a hon-matsuri (real festival), a long procession featuring a procession of the Hachiman imperial carriage. At the center of the festivities is the act of purifying water being splashed on the mikoshi bearers by spectators. A crowd of bearers lift the 2,500 kilogram mikoshi and dance in tons of water being delivered by spectators and Tokyo Metropolitan Fire-brigade.
