‘’I’m going back to Japan tomorrow.’’
When I let her know about that, she was a little smiles to lonely.
''I see. You may be back to Bangladesh at next year, but I will not be anywhere around that time. Be well...''
She stroked my shoulder while she said it.
The first time we met was when I visited The Dhaka Cancer Hospital. She came for a check-up with daughter who are same generation as me, and it was my first experience that I met arsenic poisoning patient.
At present time, arsenic pollution through ground water is reported almost all over the country in Bangladesh. Eluted arsenic in a stratum is absorbed into human body through well water and it has a negative impact on variety of organs such as skin, inward organs, respiratory system and nerves. It is also known causes cancer. She is also one of them, and more than 65,000 people have toxicosis in Bangladesh.
The reason why arsenic is eluted has not been explained yet. Besides, arsenic is invisible, tasteless and odorless. In addition, well water is used not only for drinking water but also for irrigation and fish breeding in the country, residual arsenic therefore has serious negative impact too.
It is 8 years since I met her. We have a friendship that has lasted for a long time. However I think that her condition is getting worse and worse day by day. Unfortunately, it is not just her, at least 20 million people still face a threat of arsenic right now.
