These digital photographs document the tradition of pehlwani (wrestling) in one of old Lahore's akharas (arenas) associated with the historic fort, Shahi Qila. A public activity for over 100 years, on Sunday mornings locals still flock here to watch pehlwans (meaning warrior or champion) make and drink strength-building, almond milk, warm up using age-old techniques, and competitively show off their skills on a mud wrestling ground. Sadly, despite a glorious history and tradition, the art of pehlwani is gradually dying out in Pakistan.
