The photos tell the story of Guendalina, a young woman of Italian-Dutch descent, who lived in Brussels and identified with the 1930s. Her father committed suicide. She lost her brother, at the age of 13 and had a strenuous relationship with her mother. She was alone, unemployed, and tried to come to terms with the meaning of life. After two suicide attempts, a short admission to a mental home, from which she was expelled because of her rebellious nature, she finally succeeded in taking her own life.
The photos reflect and construct, in a documentary and fictional way, Guendalinaʼs universe. They reveal, literally and figuratively, the vulnerable nudity of a lonely woman who wanted to be seen and heard.
