Tsukumogami

"Tsukumogami – Washed-up memories – a story about nature, loss and human resilience" was a unique musical spectacle performed by the Japanese percussion group Dadadadan Tenko from Osaka on the beach of Terschelling, The Netherlands, during the Oerol Festival 2017. It was about one of the largest natural disasters in Japanese history: the seaquake of 11 March 2011. Nearly 20,000 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands were affected by the disaster. Over 2,500 people are still missing. Incorporated into the show were the works of the artists Nishiko and Maria Kley. Nishiko has repaired many objects that have washed ashore after the tsunami and these were on display in wooden boxes spread around the beach. Maria Kley's “To The Sea” was a participative installation, a tribute to the victims of the tsunami. Visitors of the performance were invited to pay a tribute and tie a ribbon between the poles, each ribbon standing for one of the 2550 still missing victims.
