To me these images show a quieter side of an otherwise loud and aggressive city. Hidden all around us still exists the softer moments. Those times when for just a few seconds we're left alone. I don't always know what draws me to these simpler narratives, but when I develop the film and see some of them I can't help but understand a part of myself. Maybe I too am looking to quietly decompress in the same way. Or maybe these people had no intention at all and it was just timing and a little luck. Shooting later in the day with those soft pools of light also helps build the mood. Getting the exposures correct isn't always easy in that light, but when it all works it can be so compelling to me. New York City can certainly feel like being in a car wreck at times, but if you make the effort to slow it down you might be surprised at what you see. The idea is that each image hands of to the next in both composition and tonality. And In that way, I hoped to reinforce my theme.
