“Les routes de l’exil: l’Europe” is part of a documentary work on the status of refugees in Europe.
This series was produced between Ventimiglia (Italy) and the Roya valley (France), a Franco-Italian border region, between August 2016 and 2017.
Since the beginning of the "migration crisis" in Europe, internal borders within the Schengen area have been restored. During their exile journey, refugees arrive in France from Ventimiglia by several hours walking along the rails, through tunnels or through the mountains. Among the groups are many women and unaccompanied minors. After Libya and crossing the Mediterranean, their journey is still dangerous, with fatal accidents to cross the European borders.
When they arrive in Breil sur Roya, a small mountain village on the border, refugees are welcomed by citizens. Because of the lack of state support citizens become activists and organize themselves to provide aid.
