See Me as I Am is the project focusing on Ethiopian immigrants in Atlanta. It is an exploration into culture, difference, communication and shared immigration experience, through black and white portraiture.
In the past three years, I went to 20 Habesha families' home to take portraits on black and white film. During each photo sessions, I had the opportunity to learn about Ethiopian culture and their immigration life in the United States.
That created a common background between these people and me, as immigrant myself to the United States. Through this shared experience, I see communication, respect and acceptance as essential of the immigration. Culture and county may have difference, but human are the same: Everyone wants to be respected, but first, we need learn to respect others.
