These images are from a a personal self-funded documentary project I started this July in Wyoming,USA.
I saw a brief clip of the Indian Relay Riders on You Tube and i was instantly fascinated,I packed my camera equipment and went from California up to Wyoming this July to the Sheridan WYO rodeo where there would be a series of Indian Relay Riders Racing to start the Rodeo.
I went not knowing anybody but wanting to see if this was a potential ongoing documentary project that i could get my artistic vision into..I wanted to meet the Riders and the community behind the riders. This is an ongoing project that i will carry on next year when the racing season is on.I met many fantastic people and have sent prints and shared digital images to these teams and Community and i am in the process of building relationships.
The Indian Relay Riders are a group of teams from Native Indian Reservations across the Western Sates of America that Race horses around a track bareback and then leap from one horse and run and leap onto another horse, called the exchange which is often chaotic and dangerous.the sport is steeped in Native traditions and goes back to when young warriors from different tribes would race each other .
