About L Mikelle Standbridge
Mikelle grew up in a mountain village in Southern California, USA, got a degree in Art – with an emphasis in photography – from San Francisco State Univ. During her studies, she integrated 3 years in France to study French, darkroom printing, and art history. She was then awarded a scholarship to get her Masters from the Univ. of Chicago. While teaching photography in Chicago at Columbia College, she met her Italian to be husband and moved to Milan in 2000. She is now represented by the Milan gallery Gli Eroici Furori – Contemporary Art.
The teaching environment was radically diverse in the three institutions where I studied: S.F.S.U. was very alternative and experimental; the Univ. of Paris was extremely formal; the Univ. of Chicago was conceptual. After 20 years of darkroom printing and years of working with different themes, always interrupted by a change of house/city/country/language, the “Photo-Bodies” series finally found its form and proper mix of experiment, formal value, and concept.
I recently founded a non-profit art association, housed in a 18th C. building in Italy, ideal as a backdrop for photographers and installation artists. www.casaregis.org
